Illustrative reference architecture

The Circular Material Passport Journey.

How a material batch moves from source claim to authorised industrial use, reuse or recovery.

Physical identity anchors the item. Authority governs the claim. Receipts prove the lifecycle event.

The problem

Traceability is not enough.

A material passport becomes useful only when another role can responsibly rely on it. Claims, test reports, lifecycle calculations, process notes and commercial approvals often remain distributed across separate systems.

KATLAS does not create another material data lake. It governs the journey between evidence holders.

Shared journey rail

Seven stages, one consistent loop.

At every stage of the material's life, the same consistent loop holds:

Receive → Assess locally → Act under authority → Sign outcome → Pass controlled evidence onward

  1. Stage 01

    Material identity created

  2. Stage 02

    Source and process claims issued

  3. Stage 03

    Test evidence requested and verified

  4. Stage 04

AI / LCA / quality assessment advises

  5. Stage 05

Manufacturer accepts, conditions or rejects use

  6. Stage 06

    Lifecycle or process event recorded

  7. Stage 07

Recovery, reuse or recycling claim closes the loop

Five role cards

What each evidence holder receives, assesses and passes on.

Role

Material Producer

Incoming request
Request for source claim, batch identity and process notes.
Evidence available
Production records, source declarations, batch identity, process-condition log.
Local assessment
Has the batch been correctly identified and is the source claim consistent with internal records?
Permitted action
Issue or refuse the source claim against this batch identity.
Receipt issued
Source-claim receipt referencing batch, declared source class, withheld commercial detail.
Next handoff
Pass the source claim and batch identity to the test and certification partner.

Role

Test & Certification Partner

Incoming request
Request to verify a property, conformance or certification status for a batch.
Evidence available
Test methodology, raw test data, certification authority, expiry.
Local assessment
Does the held evidence support the requested verification within scope and date?
Permitted action
Confirm, refuse, or release a bounded verification claim.
Receipt issued
Verification receipt referencing test scope, validity window, withheld raw data.
Next handoff
Pass verification reference forward; raw data remains in custody.

Role

AI / LCA / Quality Tool

Incoming request
Request to calculate, compare, screen or summarise across permitted claims.
Evidence available
Authorised inputs, reference thresholds, model version, advisory scope.
Local assessment
What can be advised from permitted material without overriding test or commercial decisions?
Permitted action
Surface advice, missing claims, threshold comparisons or inconsistencies. Never approve material use.
Receipt issued
Advisory receipt referencing inputs used, model version, advisory only.
Next handoff
Pass advisory result to a named authorised role.

Role

Manufacturer / Specifier

Incoming request
Request to permit a specific industrial use under a specification and policy.
Evidence available
Specification, prior approvals, fitness criteria, exception policy.
Local assessment
Do the available claims and advice meet the specification within authority?
Permitted action
Accept, condition, escalate or refuse the proposed industrial use.
Receipt issued
Use-permission receipt referencing specification, condition set, withheld commercial terms.
Next handoff
Pass permitted-use reference to recovery and lifecycle handlers.

Role

Recovery / Reuse Partner

Incoming request
Request to claim a recovery, reuse or recycling event against the batch.
Evidence available
Recovery process record, condition assessment, downstream destination claim.
Local assessment
Is the recovery claim attributable, in-scope and not already retired?
Permitted action
Record, refuse or escalate the recovery event.
Receipt issued
Lifecycle-event receipt referencing batch, event class, downstream reference.
Next handoff
Close, fork or pass the batch identity onward to its next industrial life.

AI boundary

AI may suggest. Authorised roles decide.

AI may

  • · calculate
  • · identify a missing claim
  • · compare a threshold
  • · detect an inconsistency
  • · draft an advisory summary

AI may not

  • · approve material use
  • · override test evidence
  • · release restricted evidence
  • · commit a manufacturing decision

Closing pattern

From traceability to accountable industrial coordination.

Custody

Each organisation retains control of raw evidence, technical reports, proprietary process knowledge and commercial thresholds.

Authority

Every claim, approval, exception and release is tied to a named role, purpose and decision boundary.

Receipts

Each lifecycle event records the outcome, authority basis, evidence references and what was shared or withheld.

The passport does not merely describe the material. It governs what authorised parties may do with the evidence around it.

Illustrative reference only. No live manufacturing integration, laboratory testing, material-passport deployment or KATLAS-signed transaction is implied by this page.
